The wild shady forests of the mythical Carpathians are dark and mysterious where popular folk costumes and traditions are among the best preserved in the world.  The country provides numerous testimonies from the middle ages among which the citadels and fortified peasant churches scarcely to be found in other countries. Day 01:  Day 1: Bucharest – Piatra Neamt (350 km)

Pick-up at the airport or from hotel in Bucharest and drive to Bucovina - a charming area of Northern Moldavia filled with beech forests, whitewashed villages, horse - drawn carts and the famous painted monasteries. Drive through the scenic Moldavian landscape and the famous vineyards of  Vrancea county. Accommodation and dinner  in Piatra Neamt. (D)

 

Day 02:  Day 2: Bucovina Area (250 km)

Today get ready for the full-day tour of the famous painted monasteries of Bucovina: Humor Monastery with the best preserved inside frescoes, Voronet Monastery known as the "Sistine Chapel" of Eastern Europe so famous for the blue colour used by the artist as background for its frescoes, Moldovita Monastery where the Golden Apple award given to the monastery in 1975 by UNESCO affiliated journalists organisation is to be seen and Sucevita Monastery - the best preserved of  them all with imposing walls and defensive towers. Drive to Campulung for dinner and accommodation. (B, D)

 

Day 03: Campulung – Hoteni (350 km)
Drive through the scenic Prislop Pass to Maramures, the land of wooden churches and carved wooden gates, unique folk costumes and traditions. On the way to Hoteni, visit the 18th century Rozavlea wooden church with well preserved interior paintings and the superb wooden architecture at Barsana monastery. Enjoy a dinner and accommodation at farmers house in Hoteni. (D)

Day 04: Maramures Area (150 km)
Full day tour in Maramures, the land of wooden churches and carved wooden gates. Your tour will include a visit at the unique Merry Cemetery of Sapanta. A local woodcarver created colourful, beautiful, personal and sometimes funny wooden tomb crosses. Your tour will include visits to some of most representative wooden churches of Maramures, part of UNESCO World Heritage such as Calinesti and Desesti.  Since it is Sunday, join the locals for the Holy Sunday Mass and mingle into the colourful crowds, wearing traditional folk-costumes and observing centuries-old customs. Accommodation in a farmer's home in Hoteni village. (B,D)

 

Day 05: Hoteni – Sighisoara (380 km)
In the morning drive to Surdesti village and visit the highest wooden church of Europe with its 57m high spire, placed under UNESCO protection. From Maramures you descend into legendary Transylvania, the land beyond the forests, whose cultural heritage has been shaped by a mixture of peoples, languages and traditions: Romanian, German, Hungarian. On the way to Sighisoara, take a couple of hours to discover Cluj Napoca, the Cultural Capital of Transylvania. Visit the impressive Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael, in front of which stands the equestrian statue of king Mathias Corvinus. Arrive in Sighisoara, a Saxon medieval fortress - town, part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage as the best preserved and continuously inhabited early medieval citadel in Eastern Europe. Accommodation in Sighisoara, within the old city walls. (B, D)

Day 06: Day 6: Sighisoara – Biertan – Sibiu – Sighisoara (200 km) 
After breakfast half day to explore Sighisoara. Visit the famous Clock Tower Museum and the Torture Room, the Evangelical Church and the Armour Room. Visit the house in which Count Dracula - Vlad the Impaller was born and the Church on the Hill. Continue to Biertan and visit the fortress church, World Cultural Heritage site that hosts the largest wing altar in Romania and also used to be for more than 300 years  the Transylvanian bishop residence. Afterwards continue to the beautiful town of Medias, fist mentioned in documents in the 13th century. Drive to Sibiu, the European Cultural Capital in 2007. Here you'll see arcaded medieval shops and visit the Cathedral where the son of Vlad the Impaller -Mihnea the Bad, was buried. Return to Sighisoara for dinner and overnight.

Day 7:Sighisoara - Brasov – Bran – Sinaia (250 km)
Today spend  time visiting Brasov and Bran - two of Romania's well-known places. Depart to Brasov, fairy-tale town founded in the 12th century by the Saxon settlers. Brasov today still preserves its beautiful medieval atmosphere created by many Middle Age buildings. The highlight of of the city tour is surely a visit to the Gothic Black Church, the largest gothic style church in South-Eastern Europe. Visit the St Nicolae Church and the First Romanian School, where a lecture about Old Brasov will be held by a local teacher. Drive on to Bran to visit the castle – made famous by Bram Stoker's novel as the residence of the vampire count. The castle was built by the merchants in Brasov in the 14th century to protect the border between Valachia and Transylvania.  In the evening arrive in Sinaia, the mountain resort known as the "Pearl of Carpathians". Accommodation in Sinaia. (B,D)

Day 8: Sinaia (50 km) - After breakfast, take your time to discover all the treasures Sinaia holds for its tourists. Visit Peles Castle, an exquisite piece of architecture, which has served as the summer residence for King Carl I. of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Enter Sinaia monastery - a beautiful example of the Valahian-Byzantine style, and the first building in Sinaia. Accommodation in Sinaia. (B,D)

 

Day 9: Sinaia – Bucharest (150 km)

In the morning, drive through the scenic Prahova valleye and return to Bucharest. Finish the tour with a panoramic tour of the Romanian capital city
